Robert Wiremu Obituary ,Auckland Based Composer, Singer and Vocal Coach Has Passed Away

It is with profound sadness that we acknowledge the passing of our cherished friend and colleague, Robert Wiremu. A distinguished vocal coach, composer, and choral conductor, Robert was a musician and educator whose mahi and presence irrevocably changed and enriched New Zealand’s musical landscape. For the members of Luminata Voices, the loss is deeply personal.

Robert was a steadfast pillar and guiding force within New Zealand’s choral community, and a much-loved friend to countless individuals in our choir and the wider singing whānau. His kindness, boundless generosity, and profound love for music uplifted every ensemble and every person fortunate enough to work alongside him. We fondly recall his presence at our debut concert in 2021, and a brief, warm chat afterwards, before he made a swift exit for a roast brewing at home—a memory that now speaks beautifully to his devotion to both whānau and music.

His unwavering support was epitomised when he stepped in on the day of our ‘Let Her Voice Shine’ concert, seamlessly playing the harp part of Leonie Holmes’ ‘Land Pictures’ on piano when our harpist fell ill. In that moment, as in so many others, he was our saving grace.

We are devastated by his passing but deeply grateful for the music, friendship, and indelible memories he shared with us. His legacy will continue to resonate in our hearts and in every note we sing together.

A celebration of Robert’s life will be held at the Auckland University School of Music, Old Library at 6 Symonds Street, on Saturday, 25 July 2026, from 12 noon. All are welcome to bring a memory, a story, a waiata, and a plate to share. Further information about additional commemorations will be shared as details are confirmed. Moe mai rā e te rangatira.
