Sergeant Grier was a true pioneer, one of the historic “Original 8”—the first eight Black firefighters hired on March 1, 1951, to integrate the Winston-Salem Fire Department. With immense courage and unwavering dedication, Sergeant Grier and his colleagues faced immense challenges, breaking barriers and forever changing the face of our department.
