The Forsyth County Fire Division joins our fire service family and the entire community in mourning the passing of retired Winston-Salem Fire Department Sergeant Robert Grier, who died at the remarkable age of 104. We extend our deepest condolences to Sergeant Grier’s family, friends, former colleagues, and all whose lives were touched by his enduring legacy.

Sergeant Grier was a true pioneer, one of the historic “Original 8”—the first eight Black firefighters hired on March 1, 1951, to integrate the Winston-Salem Fire Department. His hiring marked a pivotal moment in our city’s history. With immense courage and unwavering dedication, Sergeant Grier and his colleagues faced immense challenges, breaking barriers and forever changing the face of our department.

His commitment to serving others helped shape the very character of the Winston-Salem Fire Department. He paved the way for generations of firefighters who followed, proving that valor and professionalism know no color. His legacy is not just a footnote in history; it is woven into the fabric of #WSFire and the community he served with distinction.

Today, we honor not only his remarkable 104 years of life but his profound and lasting impact. We are grateful for his years of service, his quiet leadership, and the powerful example he set both on and off the call.
